Urinary Tract Infection (stubborn)

Hi there.

I developed a UTI about five weeks ago, and was prescribed Trimethroprim for it.Unfortunatley after I'd finished the course, it came back, and I was prescribed Macrodantin. I had an allergic reaction to this (hives wheezing itching and shakiness) so was told by the doctor to stop taking it. I'm now on ciprofloxacin 250 mg (five day course) and have just had the first dose. I'm really freaking though in case I have another allergic reaction.

I have penicillin allergy anyway (again, hives etc) and now this with the Macrodanting.
Is cipro ok for people with the two above allergies?

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Individuals who are allergic to penicillin, are also allergic to cephalosporins. Nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin) and Ciprofloxacin, do not exhibit cross reactivity to penicillin. Please ensure to take Ciprofloxacin regularly. Also, take plenty of oral fluids.  If symptoms are not controlled, then have a culture and sensitivity test done to find out the correct antibiotic that the infecting organism is sensitive to and taking this medication for the required amount of days may help to clear urinary tract infection.
