Weird Smell in my Nasal passage will not go away.

I have had nasal problems for years, nasal polyps, sinus surgery sinus infections etc. For many years I have experien ced smells that reside in my nasal passages. I recently had nasal polyps removed for a second time and am on an aggressive treatment of antibiotic, antihistamine, and allergy medications.
Since I have had this smell for many years when people ask me to identify it, I can't because I have only this smell to reference so I can not compare it to anything else.
What I have noticed, and what I have yet to read in my research is that WHEN ANY OTHER SMELL IS PRESENT, I CAN SMELL MY WEIRD SMELL IN PLACE OF IT. So, if a strong smell is present, I smell my smell stronger. It appears the smell comes and goes, but it actually gets triggered by other smells. I have spoken to my ENT and she hasn't got a clue. I wonder if there is some kind of study being done on this phenomenon? I have cleaned out my Sinuses with alkalol(not misspelled) and a baking soda and salt water solution on a regular basis, but it does nothing to reduce the smell. I can even put vicks vaporub under my nose to try to overpower the smell but nothing helps.
Are there any real Doctors out there that can come up with a solution? I'm totally at a loss...

I am using just a plain old "douche" bottle that comes with the sinus rinse kit. I started using it couple years ago on the advice of the ENT, with an "inhaler". Actually, I had been prescribed the "inhaler" stuff god knows how long ago, even though I kept telling them they didn't work, and they would tell me that this was the latest and greatest, and  to try it. I guess you and I know what that does- thank god I didn't use it much,  usually it was just when I was stuffed up, so it didn't really get a chance to screw me up too bad.

The one real bad thing I did, I think, was that I used water off my tap for the rinse, and I am on a well. (You see this coming, don't you?) I think our well water has a fair amount of bacteria in it. Anyway, I got myself a bacterial infection a couple of times, wasn't until this last episode that the light came on in my head. I was told that this was a deep well, and I thought it was safe, but got to thinking about it, and stopped using tap water, and got purified water to use, and that helped. Anyway, got that part figured out, what a relief to at least give my system some kind of a chance.

Other than the rinse, I am taking GSE, about 10 drops to a glass, about 4 times a day, and also I am taking enzyme supplement, and a "broad" probiotic, which I hope I can reduce to acidophilus in a few weeks, will see.

Not sure if I will require the oral antifugal drug or not, still improving every day, going to stay the course and see. After all the miserable times of failed doctoring, still expect things to back slide one day, but have had about 2 weeks of steady improvement, so every day is great for me.

About a year ago, I expected I would be dead today, I felt so bad. I was dizzy, tired, blurry vision, spots in my vision, a dry cough when laying down, hurt everywhere, notwithstanding that I had not been able to breathe through my nose for months. Just getting up to walk across the room, my heart rate would zoom up. I still managed to get out and walk and lift weights, but just through force of will. I was ready to just throw in the towel, go get a bunch of life insurance, and wait for the end. I had so much pain in my joints and muscles, I had to grit my teeth and just walk or whatever. I was seriously just tired of fighting.

Today, I had the best day of feeling good.

Well, hope to fill you in on my experience more someday, should go do something else for awhile before bed.

I got the flu in December of 2015. It was bad, and I was in bed for almost two weeks and then started to feel better. Of course, I got the usual "sick smell" that comes with the flu or a bad cold, and couldn't smell much. Once I started feeling better I took a turn for the worse, and got sick again for another couple of weeks. I think I initially had the flu, which started clearing up only to be replaced by pneumonia. Coughed for days until my whole abdomen was screaming in pain. Two weeks or so later, in about mid January I started getting back to normal, except for my sense of smell. I still had the sick smell. Around April I went to the doctor thinking I had a chronic case of sinusitis. He put me on 14 days of Augmentin, which did absolutely nothing except make my gut lash out at me for killing off all of the flora. Fast forward to now, I still have this sick smell from the moment I wake up till I go to bed. I have been using a Navage sinus rinse device with salt packets, and it makes me feel as bit better. I've used Alcolol, apple cider vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, Neosporin, and garlic juice, all to no avail. I've been using Johnson's Baby Shampoo (1 teaspoon) in my Navage every night to try to break through any potential biofilm in my sinuses and at first, it was great smelling the fresh shampoo smell. After a couple of  weeks though, this went away and I am pretty much smelling nothing much again. I know my sense of smell is intact, because there are times when my smell almost seems normal. Early this spring I was in the yard and smelled fresh cut grass and scented plants. It was great. Unfortunately that lasted for a day or two and then the sick smell returned. I will continue to use my Navage with baby shampoo, as I've noticed that my nose is running quite a bit lately, and this never happened before I started the baby shampoo. Maybe a biofilm was flushed out enough to open up a passageway and it's now draining on a daily basis. I've read that the flu can damage your smell and it can take years for it to regenerate. Its been two and a half years now, and I am tired of it. If it eventually clears up I'll be sure to update.

Update: June 5, 2018
I got a prescription for Keflex, an antibiotic, in early December of 2017. Within three days the nasty sick smell was gone! What a relief. Unfortunately, I now have a "sweet smell" that is much easier to deal with, but still annoying and my sense of smell is still pretty much gone. Since the Keflex worked so well I'm pretty sure that whatever I have now causing the sweet smell is also bacterial, so I will try another antibiotic and see if that works.

For 2-3 months I have been experiencing a similar thing. I cannot taste much and a CT scan shows my sinuses are totally clear. My wierd smell is brought on by foul odors.I can smell sweet things, but have to breathe deeply. But foul smells; garbage, dog and human excrement and urine, manure, body odor, etc. I get a strong sweet smell in my nose, kind of like burned Caramel. I admit, not a terrible smell in place of foul odors, but also not normal. I miss my sense of taste the most. Anyone gotten some answers?

I have had this weird smell in my nose the past year and it won't go away, seems to be getting worse in fact. I used Vicks in my nose for years and years and I'm wondering if that is the reason, I have never had allergies or nasal issues. Really hoping this goes away it really is depressing me, I can still smell other things but not very good because of this strange smell that won't go away.

Trust me I know the feeling Dr said mine was sinus related but I never had this b4 they ruled out a brain tumor so it could be other things sinus related. The body can be a mystery a symptom can be the beginning of the end or pass suddenly or a life long disability that needs to be accepted. Most Dr work can be guess work as they are not God. I get well try this, see if this works, test for that, my guess would be. So let's hope it goes away ! Go to ENT they have different guess work but sometimes if it's clear cut problem they can solve it. My nose feels like it in a smoky bar. Out of the blue

In 1994, after having bilateral sinus surgery, I was told that I could attribute that sticky mucus & sickening sweet smell I had been experiencing while sick with sinus problems for over 2 years, to a very bad strep infection & A STAPH INFECTION. Currently, I've had a bad head cold for over a month with this sticky mucus, and now the sweet smell again. I'm currently on 10 days of AUGMENTIN; I hope it works.

http://www.everydayhealth.com/ear-nose-throat/fungal-sinusitis.aspx
I have been obsessed in researching this topic since recently expectorating 3 green masses. All came about a week apart. Two of them came out through my mouth from throat area behind my nose. The most recent I measured 3mm in length and 1.5mm wide.  I kept in a baggy for testing.  I suddenly felt like I had food lodged up at the top of my nose. (Sometimes laughing while eating I've had bits of food come out my nose). Trying to blow my nose like normal...caused it to move but remain stuck...then proceeded to plug opposite nostril to blow just that side.  The mass shot out!  This was painful after!  I was concerned after the first mass I gagged out 2 weeks prior...but tried to brush off and didn't want to worry or worry anyone around me.  I took a picture of it but disposed in trash.  It all started exactly a year ago after a cruise that I had went snorkeling in Mexico and Hondurous. About 2-3 weeks after returning home I began having smells. At first thought my feet were smelly.  After asking family if they smelt this I figured out it was coming from within my own body. It came and went for months. I just had my top back molar pulled, which had been infected and treated 3 different times with antibiotics over the course of 5 months. (I had to put off going to dentist because of expense and no dental insurance.) it was the following week sometime that I expelled the first mucus ball/ fungus ball.  I am now in the month between health coverage change and am without until February or March.  (Messed up on enrollment). Therefore am digging for answers.  The link above is just one that explains and nailed my symptoms!  My question is... All these sites say fungus balls are surgically removed...and none measured as large as mine...how and why did mine come out?!! All three were different colors. Last one is seriously worrisome...bright green with a blue hue to it...like there was food coloring mixed in its so bright.  I understand green but not a blue green.  First one being more white, clear, yellow and shaped like a live organism from ocean or space(haha).  But really, tinical shapes branching off main mass which is very dense and texture of semi-dry jello mixed with play dough.  Hard to explain...just solid, sticky, and large!! I hope this helps maybe get a start on figuring out a direction for you all to give to doctors. I'm amazed what gross stuff comes from our bodies.  Good luck!

I have had a bad smell up my nose for years.  Also awful sour taste in The mouth. The smell up the nose is sometimes worse when I'm cooking. If I open the oven door when cooking and smell it seems to me twice as bad.  It is just getting me down. Been to ENT and they told me to rinse my nose out with salt and bicarbonate soda.  No help whatsoever.  Any help please would be really appreciated.  Thanks

I know Im late and this is an old post but try zink cream, the diaper rash cream, instread of deodorant. It does not stop sweating, just neutralize odors without adding any strong smells of its own. Aluminium in anti perspirant deos are found in concentrations in cancercells and at large in the brain of alzheimer patients. It absorbed into the skin and goes straight trough the blood- brain barrier.Cancer patients are given a list from their doc that tells them what to stay away from and anti per. Deo is on top of this list. A friend of mine had cancer. Zink is something that your body needs and is a usual deficiency esp. If you have copper pipes leading your tap water. Because copper alleviates zink.

I have this sinus smell thing going on.  Mine started about a week after I had a molar pulled in the top of my mouth.  I remember my Dentist commenting that my gums were communicating with my sinuses after she pulled the tooth.  I have a lot of sinus preassure also, and the smell usually shows up when I bend over or am laying down.  Sometimes burns.  Sometimes smells like smoke, and sometimes weird like old blood or something.  Freakin gross I've tried saline solution for about a month, not much help.

Hi, did you ever get that checked out? I have been experiencing the same fume like smell and taste. I'm a cook and it is really turning my world upside down! I have sleep apnea and use a machine with a humidifier. I ran it dry last week and I'm thinking the dry air must have messed with my sinus. All I know is that everything smells the same and taste weird. I've been trying to figure out the smell and I think the description of car fumes was dead on.
I'm not having mucus or drip or throat problems. I'm just dealing with this scent that will not go away.
Any tips would be awesome.
Thank you

I had the smoke smell sensation for a number of years. Taking zyrtec would help a little. I started taking magnesium and that helped even more. I didn't smell smoke anymore. I forgot about it. Then I read some good things about vitamin k2, and that cheese, natto and grass-fed dairy are good sources for k2. I thought, okay, I'll try eating some grass-fed butter. I'm not much of a butter person, but it's in a lot of things like cookies and goods from the bakery. In any case, I started using it every day on toast or waffles and that funky smoke smell returned. I quit butter all together, and it's been about 3 weeks and the dreaded smoke smell is gone again. Butter and me just don't get along.

I have read a lot of these comments from the start, and everyone's problem is the same, but with small differences. I also have the smell mostly when I bend down.  To me, it smells like post nasal drip that is trapped somewhere.  I also hear clicking in my head and the back of my nose like you get when you are congested.  I've always had a propensity for sinus troubles and infections.  I had a very bad infection in 2013, and sometimes I feel like it stems from that.  BUT, in addition to this icky smell, I have figured out that I have hyposmia (limited smell ability)  I could always smell flowers, rain, dirt, my husband's lovely smell and now - NOTHING.  I can smell spices on some days, not on others.  Very strong lotions, salsa, things like that, but the intensity varies from day to day. Can't smell the cat litter anymore, but I actually wish I could!! I haven't had a head injury, and I've had a CT Scan and MRI which shows now major sinus trouble or brain tumors. SO, the doctors say it could be a prerequisite to either Parkinson's or Alzheimer's.  The Mayo Clinic says it could be a result of just general aging - starting at 60.  I'm 56.  So, I've lost 3/4 of my sense of smell, but I get to smell this rotten smell at least a couple times a day or more.  I'm still at a loss.  Basically, I've heard that my sense of smell will either come back or it won't.  Nothing seems to help get it back or get rid of the weird smell, but you all have given me a few ideas.  I'm going to try zinc and a few more herbal things and really hit the neti pot. Also a humidifier.  I wish you all good luck with this problem! :)

I've read over some of these comments(too many to read all) and there are some helpful tips here, but the only problem is; I don't smell mine from spraying any saline sprays, deodorant, etc., and I don't really see anyone on here describing their nasal problems who have the same cause as to how they initially smell it(what triggers it in the first place) and that worries me even more. the only time I smell it is when I bend down. not every single time I bend down, but it's especially bad if i'm working/moving around a lot. it gets worse when it gets warmer out, but I can smell it all winter long as well. i'm very confused by this, it's been happening for almost 3 years now. the best way to describe the smell is a wet dog-type smell. it's very gross and i'm kind of worried I have some sort of medical issue. can't afford to see a doctor so I was hoping maybe there was ANYBODY who could at least tell me i'm not physically sick in some way. please help.

READ ALL! THIS IS A LIFE SAVER.

I describe the smell as mostly like Honey and in conjuction I also describe it as a mouldy socks/perfumey/old garbage can/landfill/dump/rot-like smell. A perfumey smell could also be described by some but I consider it more like the first ones I mentioned.

All of them have very similar scents and It's definitely a fungus type of smell.
It smells exactly like what my refrigerator smelled like after I moved into this apartment and the last tenants left it in a mess. The refrigerators
drip pan was full of greenish, yellowish growing mold/bacteria. It stayed active and moist because of the dripping from the pipe of the refrigerator
to release the excess condensation. If you have any mold/bacteria/dust in your home, even after any medications/irrigations/surgeries/antibiotics/ETC
to attempt to or successfully remove this infection, it will always come back and potentially worsten, if you do not REMOVE THE SOURCE OF WHAT'S
CAUSING IT. After 2 weeks of trying to find the smell, I finally discovered, with some help, that it was from my refrigerator. Any area with mold/moisture spores/bacteria,
you must neutralize the problem with Bleach, as it will kill all of these things. Once you have let the bleach work in ALL areas of the source, you then must wipe
it all entirely, with an clean but not needed towel or rag, and throw it away without it droping anywhere! You may think you neutralized and removed all of the source,
but if it is for hard to reach places, THINK TWICE! It only takes a bit of bacteria/mold/spores to survive and the problem will escalate again and again! They are very
active lifeforms, with a lot of energy to quickly multiply when the conditions are right for them to do so! Unplug your refrigerator before doing any of this:
Take only your food that was frozen or in the fridge which is contained in thick containers, such as glass, to another Refrigerator/Freezer.  Anything in thin cardboard/plastic/etc, THROW THE REST AWAY! Don't take any chances!

1.
For a refrigerator, make sure you wipe all around the compressor,
even where it is very hard to reach. Take a sponge with a container of mostly vinegar (2 cups to 1/2cup of water), less water, and a "load of baking soda", but pour it slowly at a time, so it doesn't
foam over, and pour it until you see a small layer of it at the bottom of the container. Also springle it on your sponge. It is also good to add a cap of bleach with that solution.

Clean every corner of that refrigerator with it, inside at out! For the inside, make sure you clean it with water, several times afterwards. Keep the doors open, with a fan blowing in it, if you want to speed
up the process. Change your drip pan to an entirely new one, throw the other one away and make sure it doesn't touch anything other than inside your garbage can. Use gloves to do this. Do not touch
door knobs, etc, with these gloves! Do not open the garbage can with these gloves, do not leave them resting on a counter or anything! Throw the gloves away by making sure the lid of the garbage can
is already open, or use your arm to do it, as hard as it may seem. These gloves are contaminated, and you must think about that at all times, which means you cannot touch anything with them,
without contaminating whatever you touch, especially yourself directly!

After around 8 hours of airing out your refrigerator/freezer, plug it in again. Depending on how powerful your fridge is, it can take around 3-4 hours or more to be fully useable again.
If you have trouble reaching behind the compressor, thoroughly pour bleach everywhere behind it, only when the fridge is unplugged! This will kill anything that has been growing behind it!
I hope some readers will be helped by this. If there's anywhere in your home you get a foul smell or someone elses home, for some people that specific smell that caused your fungal infection
will be the EXACT smell that you will smell in your nose, time and time again, for whatever time it takes for you to get rid of it, if ever.  You must address this source, whether the foul smell
is coming from your refrigerator OR ANYWHERE otherwise, whatever you use to relieve or cure your sinuses, will come back, and back again! If one of the sources is at your work, wear a mask!
If you enjoy the discomfort that sinus (fungal) infections causes for you, disregard everything I just said. I am here to help you, and it is better that you do it in the early stages, read all of this in the
early stages, before going through all kinds of complications and other medical problems after it has been prolonged! Most doctors, as stated below, will not provide you will all of this information, and
I may make a video about it and suggest it to doctors to provide it in a booklet for anyone who has accute/chronic and reoccuring sinus conditions. This informations should also be presented to people
who have only simple allergies, before it amounts to some of what I've read in here. My condition in my opinion and in comparisons, is only accute right now as I write this but you don't want to have
to go through surgery(ies) or anti-biotics, ultimately, you want to address this before having to resort to that! Neutralize and Remove the source which TRIGGERS your sinus problems asap, and THEN
address your sinus problems OR ultimately, address both the outer source AND your inner sinuses at the same time!
I hope you all appreciate this wealth of informations, as I haven't seen anyone here present it all, yet.

Others in relation said: VERY IMPORTANT AS WELL:
I had something similar to that except it only seemed to be noticeable when I put saline spray in my nose. The smell was kind of like moldy socks.

I've been through a lot of trouble with my sinuses too. Surgery and such, treatment for allergies, but didn't get much improvement until I treated myself for a fungal infection.

I'm so glad i decided to check online about this chronic condition that my daughter has. For a long time now suffering from phlegm- went to ENT and he just dismissed it. since it 'wasnt such a bother i thought phlegm means getting rid of some infection and left it at that. But now and then i can smell this strong ink like smell. I bought a neti and asked her to use it to clean but she has been procrastinating. Now i will definitely make sure that she uses it everyday and also will make her do the ACV steam. Thank you all. I hope you guys also try these natural stuff and dont take too much of antibiotics.

Im in the middle of a bout of Influenza A, I have chronic Asthma, and my breathing is an issue.  Today out of the blue my breathing got worse and I started smelling dirt, like right when it starts to rain in the dirt kind of a choking kind of smell like on the asphalt when it first starts to rain, kind of takes your breath away.  Right now I just have tissue shoved up both nostrils, lol, and it seems to help a bit but wow weird!

Also, like many posters here, I have a deviated septum and the same frustrating experiences of seeing doctor after doctor who were clueless about a diagnosis or offered any help at all (but still charged an arm and a leg for their "expertise").

I live in a nice part of the country but the MDs here are quacks or puppets of the big pharmaceutical companies.

I'm placing more faith in forums like this and natural products. Trying the apple cider vinegar right now!

Yesterday, I smelled poo and thought I had stepped in something. I changed my clothes and shrugged it off. Then I realized it wasn't on me...the smell was in my nose. I thought I was dying and went online to find the name of the terrible disease that was consuming me. Thankfully, I found this post!!!

I am not alone and not suffering from a rare disease - and not imagining this! Thank you, each one of you for posting!

I don't know if you guys use a humidifier or not. I bought mine a year ago when i got sick during the winter. Now a year later, I'm using it becuase I got the flu virus. I immediately changed all my air filters in the house (including the one inside the main unit). I started to feel better instantly, except for my nose. Now, after 3 days of using the humidifier, I noticed the same odor as everyone is experiencing. Like the after smell of rain or something moldy. I took my humidifier apart to clean it and noticed there was a lot of build up inside. I don't know if it was calcium deposits or what. But I took out the heating rods, dipped them in apple cider vinegar to loosen them up, and then physically had to rigorously scrape them off the rods. While scrapeing, i realized that these deposits turn into veryyyyyy fine dust. After cleaning and putting back the humidifier, i noticed my smell get REALLY strong. I don't know if I inhaled a lot of that while i was scrubbing it off. But it makes me thing that this stuff was inside the humidifer being mixed with the water, steamed, and released into the room this whole time. Now I could be a 100% wrong. But Apple cider vinegar did disolve or slowly break apart the build-up deposit. So I'm going to try the Apple cider vinegar sinus rinse and see if it works.

I am having this "Sambar" smell (a type of indian dish made of lentils) which I would have smelt when I was 16 (I am now 36). then sometimes the smell changes to "Vibhoodi" (sacred ash which hindu monks smear on thier body to signify lord siva) which I would have not smelled for a long time (maybe 15 years ago)

This has been going on for 1.5 years, my wife dont know, like she does not understand.

BUt today, I used the Indian sandalwood bar soap, it has a very strong TFM and smell. Now the sambar smell has come back but now ugly.

I stopped eating dinner halfway because I could not bear.

I think it is something to do with the nervous system.
I will check with the doctor and update

for temporary relief try 'quercetin with bromelain' a supplement available for allergies. I suffer from the very same problem periodically. Unfortunately I can't tell when I smell unless someone points it out to me. Its so embarrassing. When I produce this foul smell, I take two caps 20 minutes before the meal, twice or  three times a day and couple of days later the smell is gone. Beware, this supplement acts as diuretic, I do get cramps the second day for sure. Eventually it goes away.

Disclaimer: I am not part of any organization or company. The only reason it mentioned this supplement is because it works for me.

Were you able to find  cure for your son? I have been dealing with the exact same problem for about 10 years now. My allergist was not much of help. However, I found a supplement called 'quercetin with bromelain' that helps me get rid of this foul smell. I take two early in the AM 20 minutes before breakfast and two around noon before lunch, two days in a row and the smell is gone. However, this supplement acts as diuretic and it give me cramps. I prefer the cramps over this awful smell any day. But the problem is I cannot tell that I smell until someone points it out. This is a major issue.

Excellent, excellent advice. I woke up with this horrendous, mothbally slash something else smell that I can't quite describe and immediately panicked. It was absolutely horrendous. The smell would waft in and out and over-powered every single smell in the house, including perfume . I decided to check the net and stumbled on this thread, and was relieved I was not the only one (I have never had anything like  this in all  of my thirty two years.) I was also completely deflated when I read that the majority of these posters had been experiencing this smell for months, sometimes even years. I had only had it for an hour or so and was going crazy. Thankfully I came across your post. I didn't have ACV or a nose inhaler thing, but decided to go for the next best thing. I put Cider Vinegar in a bowl and combined it with boiling water. I put my head in this concoction and covered it with a towel, and let the fumes penetrate my nose and sinuses. Worked like a charm. It's not a hundred percent gone but I believe that's due to infection and will take some time to heal, but this advice about vinegar was a God-send. The smell almost completely went away. Highly recommend trying these methods and thank you again, so much, for sharing.
