allergy and pain

i am allergic to dust, mould, smell of blooming flowers, some perfumes and perfumated lotions. exposure to any of this causes breathing problems, dizziness, stuffy nose and a sharp burning pain under my left breast. can allergies cause such a great pain? how much damage might the pain be causing? what part does the pain really affect?

Hi, it typically suggests allergic rhinitis with bronchial asthma which is exaggerated or precipitated during cold season or timing.

The triggering factors like dust, fog, pollens etc. can cause the precipitation of these symptoms. A careful nasal examination, Allergen-specific testing includes Skin testing, Serum tests for allergy, Allergen challenge and as well as Evaluation for concurrent conditions like Sinusitis and Asthma (pulmonary function tests) is necessary and it directs further steps for management.

You need to avoid the exposure by covering nose with a cloth, whenever you are exposed to inhalants. A trial of inhalational bronchodilators (salmeterol or formoterol against prescription) will help to relieve bedtime symptoms.

The pain is not related to allergy and it can be due to musculoskeletal pain which causes sharp pain in chest. This happens due to over usage or uncomfortable position of upper trunk or arms. I suggest you to take analgesics which will relieve pain as well as inflammation. I suggest you to consult physician for further management. Take care and regards.

Hello and welcome to MedHelp.

You are not alone.  Research is currently being done on wether perfumes are allergens or irritants.  The current thought is irritant, but there have been some studies that indicate certain fragrance molecules may actually be allergens.

It sounds like you have a form of reactive airway disease.  This can take on different symptoms including but not limited asthma.  You should talk to your doctor to determine if you have asthma.  Treating and controling your asthma (if you have it) reduces overall reactivity so they shouldn't bother you as much.

Take care and keep us posted.
