Hi,

Why were you prescribed this antibiotic?

Do you have any history of drug allergies, or allergies specific to sulfa drugs?

"Skin reactions are the most common adverse reactions to sulfa medications, ranging from various benign rashes to life-threatening Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Hives and increased sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity) are also possible. There is a possibility that if the sulfa medication is continued despite a mild rash occurring, the rash could progress to a more severe form of skin reaction.

Liver and kidney injury. People with sulfa allergy may also develop a type of hepatitis, and kidney failure, as a result of sulfa medications.

Lung reactions. Sulfa allergy can also affect the lung, with pneumonia-like reactions, worsening asthma and vasculitis occurring.

Blood reactions. Sulfa allergy can also affect various blood cells, resulting in decreased white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets, through an immunologic-mediated manner. "

Do you have any of the symptoms listed above?

Could there be another cause for the eye symptoms?

In the interim, you can do the following for relief:

Take an anti histamine, such as cetrizine, every 12 hours.
Bathe your eyes with sterile saline or antibiotic eye drops.
Wear sunglasses when going out in the sun.
Do not rub your eyes vigorously.
Avoid dust and other pollutants that may irritate your eyes further.

Do keep us posted on your doubts and progress.
Regards

I took Sulfamethoxazole TMP for 5 days now my tongue is very swollen & full of sores, my ear on the worse side is in constant pain but it feels like it connects to the worse rash in my throat on that side & throat is broken out with large red spots, I can hardly swallow, it hurts so badly I can hardly stand it! I can't hardly drink and can't eat.Do you think I have an allergy to this medication?  If so what should I do?

I don't know if it is strept or what my lips are also all chapped and blistered.  My Doctor yesterday persribed azithromycin.  I am using warm strong saline gargle & cepacol lozenges.  I hardly helps at all.
I have a lot of allergys (allergies), pinicillin, vancomycin, oxicarbazamide (?) theophylin (?) caffiene.

This is Dorrie2 I didn't understand this site and I interjected my comment into someone elses, and I mistakenly in the to: column I sent the e-mail back to myself, at ***@****.  After taking sulfamethoxazole TMP for 5 days I had the following symptoms a terribly swollen, broken-out tongue, throat and ear on one side that aches constantly.  I can't swollow hardly at all, can't eat or hardly drink, do you think it is an allergy?  My Doctor couldn't see me for 4 days so he prescribed azithromycin for possible strept.  I have fle like symptoms with a lot of coughing & flim.

I had a tick bite about 10 days ago, a bump appeared that had a white pus form inside and my fingers where tingling.  I went to the ER was prescibed Sulfamethoxazole-TMP and Naproxen.  Took my first pill and immediately starting feeling horrible, joint, headache, back and upset stomach.  Began taking pain med which had no effect, continued on medication, after 3 miserable days I decided to stop taking the medication, I have been off the medicine for 2 day now and still feel nausiated, with lower back pain.  Drinking plently of water trying to flush this med out of my system.

Antibiotic use can commonly cause yeast infections, like thrush (swollen tongue, chapped lips) , athlete's foot flaring, vaginal/ rectal yeasts and pink eye. Usually real yogurt or one with a probiotic like Activia will work. If you don't like yogurt, you can purchase a probiotic from any health food store for around $6. Make sure you practice good hand washing after touching any infected area because yeasts are VERY contagious. If your sexually active have your partner treated also.  Good luck!
