chronic hives

i started expericing hives last feb 2011. i went into a drug/alcohol treatment center.i went into detox for 7days i was fine.then moved over to the rehab.my scalp became really itchy. i always had dry scalp so i thought mayb that was it.but it became really bad and then my neck would have hives on it. i didnt have my 1st real breakout until i came home.thats when the hives appeared everywhere.in my scalp.palms of hands.feet.face it was so bad that in the month of march i went to the er 2x's because i didnt know what was happening.they gave me benedroyl which didnt do anything but make them worse.finally my family doctor gave me predinsone.which made them go away n relieved me from itching.then he sent me to an allergist who had no clue what to do w me. she started me on every allergy medicine form claratin.zyertec, zyflo etc. nothing was making them go away.finally she said i had an auto immune disease and she was going to give me cell cept along w predinsone (which my mom ha for her auto immune disease lupus) after a month of taking it.i was free of the hives and relieved to be off the steriods!! then 4mths into treatment she said she was worried of prolonged usage of the drug.since its hard on ur liver. she took me off and the hives came right back.so here i am over 1 year into this process and still no solution.my mom got me an appt w her rheumatology doctor today.she had only seen one person w what i have (apprently this is a rare case of auto immune) she wants me to have testing done and she will put me on plaquenil in 2wks(which my mom is also taking) hopefully this will help and i can be free from worrying and stress that htis has caused.maybe i will be cured from this disease one day.i have gained over 50lbs w the steriods, along w the hutch back they gave me as well. i am uuncomfortable 24/7. but i know now after reading all ur blogs that i am not alone.thank u for posting them.

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Good to see you are progressing well. Besides Chron's disease, the diarrhea could be due to gastroenteritis, malabsorption syndromes, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis and parasitic infections. Your doctor may do a colonoscopy, as in colonoscopy the entire colon can be visualized and studies the inside lining of the intestines. In the meantime ensure to use plenty of yogurt in your diet.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) can affect the skin, musculoskeletal, heart, kidneys and the brain. If there is a positive family history, it's likely that your symptoms are due to lupus. In lupus the blood counts (red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets) are low, positive antinuclear antibodies in the blood, increased sedimentation rates and increased C reactive protein. Diagnosis of Lupus is a combination of clinical symptoms and tests and there are '11' criteria, to diagnose this condition. Women have a better prognosis than men. Avoid sunlight, allergic medications and other triggering factors which could aggravate the disease.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Hey Skyeblu2122.
Stress is your underlying cause of all this.
Excessive stress induces hives, as the stress ( drug/alcohol treatment
and rehabilitation is EXTREMELY stressful to someone battling addictions-
having chronic stress, anxiety and other negative emotions bottled up inside her) causes the immune system to become dysfunctional!

People from the "outside" including Doctors have no idea how tough this is!
This  heightened stressful environment added to the chronic stress and  anxiety that ALL addicts have, weakens the immune system tremendously,
rendering unable to cope with allergens from foods, food additives, chemicals, fabrics, insects, infections etc, thus causing/ inducing hives or skin rashes.
Antihistamines and immunosuppressing drugs are just an attempt for a quick fix, but for a cure the only possible way is to deal with the stress,
the anxiety and to STRENGTHEN the immune system.
And this takes some time and some knowledge.

I have my own theories about Autoimmune Disease, but in short,
we just don't know enough to explain it. There are REAL reasons
other than that the immune system has gone mad, mistakenly attacking and destroying healthy body tissue. Suspect are undetected pathogenic
micro-organisms hiding in cell tissue, cell apoptosis involving  proteins that resemble closely certain antigens, eventually causing an immune response.
When these mechanisms continue to exist, the immune response continues, and without a proper medical diagnosis , it is commonly explained by MDs as Autoimmune Disease and according to the symptomology and some tests, get a "trash can" dx label.

My opinion is to seek a reputable Holistic Doctor and a Hypnotherapist
for this. Ideally one that combines both.

You can post here or pm me directly, as you probably need more details.
Hang in there.
Niko

I developed an itchy rash after I had a titanium plate put in my neck almost 2 years ago.  The rash came up very soon after the surgery and has never gone away.  I don't know what to do because nothing seems to help it.  There are times when it isn't as noticeable.  Have you had any surgery or dental work done?  I would try to think back to remember if there was something done around that time frame.
