hot spots on legs

by poppy4, Oct 01, 2007 01:07PM
I am a 44 yr old female and for the past four to five days I have been getting hot areas on the back of one of my legs, it is usually high up on my leg. If I am standing it just feels like an incredible heat patch and if I am sitting the sensation is like I sat on some hot water. What is it does anyone know. My leg is starting to feel slightly stiff also.

I've had a similar experience over the past few weeks.  Out of the blue, I've had this "hot spot" on the front side of my upper left thigh.  It last for 15-30 seconds, then disappears as mysteriously as it starts.  At first it happened once every 2-3 days; today, it's been a recurring theme.  I never have any outward appearance - no swelling, no redness, no musle aches or pains, no tingling.  Both my MD and an Orthop. suggested it was a case of crossed nerves sending the wrong messages to the area and it would eventually disappear.  I'm still concerned.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
There is a possibility that it is deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This is the result of venous pooling and sluggishness resulting in clot formation. Smoking and contraceptive pills hasten the process. This can be diagnosed by color Doppler or by angiogram of the leg veins.

Please talk to your doctor about this. I am not saying it is DVT, but it should be investigated.

The other possibility is ‘restless leg syndrome’. “Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder characterized by unpleasant sensations in the legs and an uncontrollable urge to move them for relief.” You can read more about this on: http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/restless_legs/restless_legs.htm

Hope this helps. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
