my daughter is allergic to dogs, we need answers please

by ona27, Aug 25, 2008 03:39PM
Our daughter has been allergic to dogs from a very small age. She is 7 now and we were told that we could get her a hypoallergenic dog. We got a long list of them. My farther- in law has a multese dog that he wanted to find a new home for. So we decided to take him for the next couple of days to see how she did with him and she started to break out. We are blessed enough to be able to give him back. This breed was said to be a very hypoallergenic dog. And  we can't afford to go down every dog on the list. I liked to hear from someone that has allergys (allergies) to dogs too, and find out thier experance and if there is a dog that might be better suited and if there is a dog that might be better to try. thanks

Hello,

There is no dog breed that is truly non-allergenic (not allergy causing) because all dogs produce dander (shed skin cells), saliva, and urine. One can be allergic to the dog dander, dog saliva, or both. Urine is less of a problem since dogs usually potty outside. Pet hair itself is not an allergen, but it can collect dander, dust, and pollen.

To test the effect of household pets on your quality of life, remove them from your home for at least two months and clean thoroughly every week. After two months, if you still want pets, bring the pet into the house. Measure the change in your daughter’s symptoms, and then decide if the change in your symptoms is worth keeping the pet.

But there are some general measures that can be taken to reduce dog allergy.
If you keep any dog,pls don’t allow it in your  daughter’s bedroom or the area where she spends most of her time and you can also try spraying areas where your dog spends its time (carpets, sofas) with an anti allergen spray. Dog allergens also attach to a dog’s fur, which carries the allergens about. The allergen attaches to carpets, upholstered furniture, mattresses, and clothes. So replace carpets with wood and use mattress covers.Use reputable allergy avoidance products throughout your home. Your daughter should wash her hands after having contact with the pet. Keep pets out of the bedroom and avoid using carpeting, draperies and upholstered furniture in your home since allergens will collect there.

Still if she shows any symptoms of allergy to the dog, then pls consult an allergy specialist

Hope I have provided you with sufficient information. In case you need any more, then pls post us.

Take care and regards.
