post race shortness of breath

by liefje42, Apr 23, 2008 11:52AM
My husband just ran the Boston marathon and ended up in the medical tent. After crossing the finish line he experienced shortness of breath and tingling around the mouth and nose. The doctors checked his lungs and found them to be clear. His pulse, BP, ekg, electrolites and all other tests were normal. He didn't have any symptoms during the race and never has them during training. He has experienced these symptoms twice before, both times last year following a marathon in May and a 1/2 Ironman in September. Any ideas?

Hi,

Nothing can be said for sure without a proper clinical examination and certain investigations.

You need to get a check up done including chest xray and xray of the sinuses done.

Only then would a definite diagnosis, can be made?

Is he allergic to any specific substances?

Let us know the above details so that we may be able to help you.

Regards.

Thanks for the reply.
They said his lungs were clear when they checked after the race. Although no x-ray was done. His heart rate recovery after the race was good. He was at 76bpm 5 minutes after finishing the race.
He is allergic to cats and dogs, nothing else.
His most recent checkup (January) included a stress test and there were no concerns.

Hi,

You need to talk to your doctor about getting  achest xray and lung function testing done and especially - to see for  post exercise changes in lung function.

This could be exercise induced asthma and only your doctor or chest specialist can tell you the correct diagnosis after the above investigations.

Does he have symptoms of rhinitis or sinusitis?

Let us know about any other doubts that you have.

Regards.
