rare allergy

Just a thought to possibly help those of you with chronic hives.  I am not saying it will help everyone but maybe a few of you can benefit.  My daughter broke out into hives at times so severly that her eyes were swollen shut.  They would itch and she cried because of the discomfort and the way she looked.  She would also vomit at times.  When went go out to eat the reaction was even worse.  She has been tested for allergies and everything came back that she has no allergies.  Her allergist perscribed zyrtec syrup and sugested that she may be reacting to a perservative.  I put her on a perservative free diet and she had no more break outs (unless she snuck a loli pop or given something with perservatives).  For Christmas we made homemade ginger bread houses and sugar cookies.  We used food coloring to color the house and cookies.  She of course had a very bad reaction that evening into the next day.  Thus the mystery of the hives solved.  I since have been looking at the labels of the things I used to give to her and discovered that all of them had yellow #5 in them.  Check the labels.  Dyes are in just about all foods that are prepackaged.  Oh by the way, it can be in some medications too. Ask the pharmacist!! Hope this helps someone.

Congrats on finding your daughter's allergy!  Preservatives definitely do cause things like migraines and can have even worse reactions if the body is inundated with them, so it's not unheard of that your daughter would be allergic to preservatives or dyes both.  I imagine it'll be tough going to find food without both of these, but she'll be eating a lot better in the long run.  :)  All the best to both of you!
