rash and hives from rocephine

by jking1, Apr 20, 2008 09:29AM
I had a shot of rocephine 6 days ago.  I was also given a shot of medrol (steroid) to help clear up the infection quicker.  2 days later I woke up coverd in hives my face was swollen, my ears, and my neck.  I went back to the doctor he gave me shots of benadryl and decadron.  It seemed to be clearing up the next day.  Then I woke up that next morning coverd on my stomach and chest with hives.  I went to the ER they gave me prednisolone.  It started clearing up again later on that day.  Well today I woke up with the hives and rash on my arms legs and stomach.  My question is how long does it take to get rid of the hives and rash?  Also could there be something else going on.  The rash on my arms are really small whelps and the rest are large whelps.  Is there anything else other than benadryl to help with the itching?

Hi,

Rocephine is ceftriaxone. Why were you given the antibiotic? Were you asked to follow up with your doctor?

Have you had allergic reactions in the past? Are you allergic to any specific substances?

The response to medications and resolution of symptoms is variable in case of allergic reactions.

You could take some OTC oral non sedating antihistamine or antiallergic medications like cetrizine or loratadine for your symptoms. Apply calamine lotion at the site of the lesions to help soothe the itching.

In your case, it would be best to ask your doctor for a test dose of the medication before actually giving you the antibiotic. The test dose will help screen out the antibiotics you are possibly allergic too.

Let us know if you have any doubts and post us about how you are doing.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.
