rocephin hives

My son is 21 months old.  A few days ago we ended up in the ER for dehydration and an infection.  He was given a dose of rocephin by iv.  Now everyday he has had hives on his face which his pediatrician intially said she did not think the reaction was to the antibiotic.  Now 3 days later he is still getting hives.  I strongly believe this is an allergy to the rocephin he was given but she seems to think that to much time has passed for it to be that.  Mother's intuition is telling me different.. Am I crazy.   Nothing else has changed for him so I don't know what else it could be.  Any thoughts and if it is an allergy to the meds how long can this go on for?

Hi

Thanks for the post! How is your son now?

Yes, the drug can cause rash. Is it 3 days after stopping the drug? In that case you must test him for hemorrhagic fevers. A rash after viral infection is common. However platelet count must be done to rule out rash due to underlying bleeding.

The rash could also be measles, chickenpox etc which occur after a bout of cough, cold and fever. The rash could be after effects of staphylococcal infection.

Please get his rash examined by a doctor. It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
