steroid dependent asthma

Help!! I've been on prednisone for 15 months and every time I try to stop I get sick.  Now my immune system is weakening and doc says I need antibiotics for 30 days at a time.  I'm seeing serious side effects after this long and I'm not any better.  There's got to be an alternative.  51,occassional smoker, never been sick before, just started with "allergy related steroid dependent asthma".  I'm tired of steroids, extra weight, being tired and feeling unhealthy all the time.  Suggestions?  Alternatives?  Accupuncture?  What?  I'm ready for your advice

Thanks, I really have stopped the smoking.  It has helped but not enough.  My breathing without the pred is okay for about 2 wks then declines rapidly until I have to use inhalers, nebulizer and back on large doses of prednisone again.  Allergist is just as frustrated as I am.  Zolair injections are specially mixed by an immunogist and after about 6 months, still no change.  I am at the end of my rope.  Discouragement does not describe.  Thanks for posting.

hello, i know u have probobly hear this before.however I use to have mild asthma and I quit smoking and have never had an asthma attack agian. It could be caused from smoking, and second hand smoke. I think u should try it, and u really should try to wean yourseld from the pred, and maybe see a immunoligist to help with the immune system, as they usually deal with asthma, allergy, and immune system problems. hope this helps. best wishes
