strange reaction to ALL histamine antagonists

strange reaction to ALL histamine antagonists

I'm not quite sure where to post this question. I've been to over 6 doctors and no one is sure what's going on.

A year and a half ago I started Zoloft for social anxiety. Was going OK. I was then prescribed nasonex and allegra (which I have been prescribed before) for allergies that were cropping up - that night, I had a hot flash after a hard workout, developed an anxiety disorder and insomnia for a few months. I stopped taking all drugs and returned to normal for a week. Then I went to a bar, had not too many drinks, went to sleep, woke up, and everything came back again. They found a mild sleep apnea in pursuit of my insomnia issues, but I'm loathe to credit all the problems to that. The apnea has gone untreated. I've been descending into a perceptive abnormality (severe depersonalization) since, though panics and insomnia have since gone away seemingly on their own.

I know, that's a mess of things. But my ultimate question for this forum is pertinent to when it all started, and a reaction I continue to have - antihistamines make me panic. Badly. Not just h1 antagonists, but I noticed it happened with h2 antagonists as well when I took the occasional pepcid complete. The panic I would describe as an inner trembling, sweating, akathisia. I'd never had a panic attack in my life before that night.

I've been chasing this whale for a year and a half now and am mentally losing the battle. My response to histamine antagonists is a red flag for me but no one knows what it is.

Hi, anti histaminics usually will not cause such effects. Few patients may react abnormally to the contents of the drug know as idiosyncratic reaction. Such reaction can manifests as any symptoms. In your case, you are having motor symptoms like tremor and rigidity. In such cases it is better to avoid the offending drugs. You can change to other drugs in the anti histaminics. If no relief; then avoid anti histminics and go for short term steroids or mast cell stabilizers.

Another possibility can be drug drug interaction between the zoloft. One such interaction is seen between one of the H2 antagonist (cimetidine) with zoloft (but not well known with other anti histaminics). It increases the concentration of zoloft and causes serotonin syndrome which can manifest as sweating, tremors etc.

I would advice you to consult allergy specialist to discuss about this alternatives. Take care and regards.
