tickly cough

i get tickly coughs on a night sometimes which i also get somtimes throgh the day, sucking on a cough sweet or holding a cloth over my face to breath through also helps it usually subsides with this help,but iv had the problem for a few yrs now and its scary as i have copd has any1 any ideas wat it cud be? i feel its some kind of allery thats causing the tickling is there anything i could get over the counter for this?

The other causes for long term cough (night) besides asthma are GERD and post nasal drip from allergies. GERD is gastro esophageal reflux disease where the stomach acids come back into the esophagus and spill into the wind pipe causing cough. Treatment with antacids will help neutralize the acids. Post nasal drips can occur with sinusitis and throat infections. Giving up cigarettes will abolish smoker's cough in 90% of people. Talk to your GP about the other causes for cough in the meantime you could try warm salt water gargles and breathing exercises.
