Sorry to his illness, I also have a husband who is suffering from Alzhiemer, the progression of disease is rather quick than I expected.
New drug is REMBER and it is still on trial from Aberdeen University. We are hoping this new drug can help hundred of thousand sufferers and their families back to normal. It is an awful diseas, it brings my tears to watch my husband going down hill. He was a pilot, he is 73, he had feeling that he was going to have dementia, it is such a shame he is so healthy but his brain is just not functioning as it should be.
He wets the floor but not himself and talk to himself more frequently, sundowning appears between 2 to 3 am and he would be very active, yell out Hello, searching all sort of things and hide them, making noises, hearing, seeing children with no legs and arm and hiding in panry, or objects and also relate himself to TV or radio and some time if he upsets then he can be nasty but just nudge gently, usually he is a gentle person. He also put tea pot and made a cup of tea in plastic container and a lighter (which I did not see him doing it if he dorped it in or left it in) placed them in microwave, of course, tea was all over the place, lighter splitted in half.
Dr prescribed him Exelon and was an excellent patch, did not have side effect but he can not go without it even a day, it is easier to manage him. The previouse test his marks dropped to 16pts from 17. Dr prescribed Ebixa, this is only his fourth day but so far so good.
This afternoon he broke into tears for his cousin and he calmed down. He still can shower himself but he has his underweare on if I am not there to help him. He put thick jacket on in summer time. He do weird stuffs and we can not make conversation like we used to have or he can not understand also can not follow our conversation (entirely different subjects)
Inta, I hope his dr can fix him and maintain him for you to be able to manage him, it does drain your metally and phisically out from you. Please take care and have a break, my friend is computer longer, skype my sister and talke to friends, shopping etc. from time to time I take him out if he is willing to go, please don't force him or her otherwise it will be hard to cope also you have to play role whoever he wants to speak to (I rang my daugther or son to be that person) then he calms down and happy on that day.
I hope you find the solution to cope with him. Take care

I have just googled for an update, it says larger trials are starting this year 2009 so you may be able to get Rember if you found out if there is a trial nearest to you, google the Medical news and put Rember in, it is in the 2nd of a 3rd year trial at Aberdeen Uni versity and has been shown to have had success in halting the progress of mental deterioration .It should be on the market by 2012 ...It sounds like the best thing I have read about to date I have a husband may be battling early stages, due to working with Toxins in the Boat building business.
Then whatever they say something is going on and you need to seek more answers for him, ask for another opinion, ,as he has had a diagnosis of early Alzheimers maybe this is part of it, there is a new med coming up called Rember', it should help a lot of people Google it to get the latest information, it is on the 3rd year of Trials , hopefully be on the market in a couple and passed by the FDA ..Good luck
We still do not have a diagnosis. He weaned off all of his meds. He is on B-12 and Folic acid only. Now he cannot complete a sentence because of severe stuttering. He still has his headaches, hand tremors, balance issues and much more.
It sounds like it could be the Meds he is on as I know they can have side effects, did they wean him off the Strattera and Adderall or did he stop immediatly ,the headaches and other symptoms you describe could be withdrawal it would be best to ask his Doctor about that. You have to go by your gut feeling with this , personally and I do mean just that... I would make sure he isnt going to get another set of side effects from the new Meds.. You can google for side effects of the new ones he will be taking, Does he work with any Toxins ? You have my sympathy , its not easy is it, I hope he feels better soon.
