Cognitive symptoms vary, depending on the stage and to an extent, from what I understand, on the type of dementia a person has.

I listened to a group of people with probable early to mid-stage Alzheimer's at a seminar a few years ago. They and their family m,embers talked about how they started to have trouble keeping score in tennis (when they were avid players for years), having trouble reading a map (when they were meticulous navigators all their adult life), having trouble using the computer, etc. for a few years before they were diagnosed.

My mother had a form of dementia due to failure of her brain shunt for adult hydrocephalus. She began having trouble subtracting numbers (she never used a calculator in her life and always did math in her head), balancing a checkbook (she was a wiz at this normally); then she started having trouble getting my jokes and understanding regional slang expressions we used all the time. Eventually, she forgot how to tie her shoes.

Cognitive symptoms can also include personality changes and poor judgement.

Cognitive symptoms include the ability to learn and remember and make judgments..  One example would be meeting a new person(s) in church and not being able to remember the name(s).  Taking a class and not remembering what it was about.  Forgetting appointments (memory losses).

In the case of Alzheimers, it continues to decline and dressing, making decisions and other judgments become difficult.  I currently work with a man in his 10th yr. of Alzheimer's.  One day he can turn the walker in the right direction to sit in his recliner, but the next cannot and would sit on the walker or on the arm of the recliner or get confused over which direction to turn.  He uses his t-shirt as a towel when I start to help him put it on.  He will start in a direction but not be able to continue and say where do I go?  Language recall is very difficult as the decline continues.  Even swallowing is affected in the last stage.
