memory part of brain shrinking

A close family member was told by his nuerologist "the memory part of brain is shrinking on both sides". He then set up an appointment with a sychiatrist.  My question is why a sychiatrist.

Welcome to the forum ! Cerebral atrophy or shrinking of brain is generally associated with dementia ( forgetfulness ), seizures, and a group of language disorders called the aphasias. Dementia is characterized by a progressive impairment of memory and intellectual function and may be severe enough to interfere with social and work skills. Memory, orientation, ability to learn may also be impaired. Aphasias are a group of disorders involving disturbances in speaking and understanding language.. Therapy for Brain atrophy is symptomatic and supportive. Mental exercises and psychotherapy may improve the symptoms . That is the reason why the neurologist must have referred your relative to the psychiatrist . Psychiatrists are qualified in Behavioral therapy and Psychotherapy  .
