bowel resection

bowel resection

My mother has had constant diahhrea.for the past year.she has been to many Drs. After about 6 month she was sent to and endrocon. Without even and exam she was told she needed her parathyroid gland out. So we did that (very costly Dr Norman) It didn't make one bit of difference. After many dr appointments and probably thousands of anti diarhee meds. ( She also had a fistula and diahhrea was coming out her vagina. She went to see a colon surgeon. He said she needed a bowel resection. Which she had 3 weeks ago. she is home now but very weak and constant diahhrea. Dr said she just has to heal. Dr said she could now take imodium (immodium) again but that seems to make it worst. The diahhrea comes on so fast she can't even make it to the bathroom which is only a few feet away. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any insight would be helpful. Thanks

Just saw your post.  Don't visit here much.  As an anal cancer survivor, I experienced lots of constant diarrhea following radiation treatment. No surgery.  Time has helped ...healing must take a long time for some of us.  About 2 yrs for me.

As to what worked.  Lomotil was the only med that stopped the diarrhea.  Immodium was completely useless.  In my case I suffer from an anxiety disorder which morphed into agoraphobia after cancer.

My chief goal was to get out of my apt.  So enough said.

Your mom is just weeks from surgery.  I believe she needs to give it time.  Incontinence is part of the whole thing.  It was problem for me too.  I'd make sure she doesn't have c-dif....I got it after treatment, as well as renal failure.   Her doc may want to get a few stool samples to make sure she doesn't have an infection.
