Low pulse/low iron

Low pulse/low iron

I am 52 years of age and going through pre-menopause.  I had two menstral cycles last year, the last over 4 months ago.  I take medication for my thyroid but other than that I don't take anything else.  I noticed lately that I am tired and don't have any stamina to do things.  I noticed that my pulse rate is about 50 and I have been gaining weight quite a bit over the past 4 years (20 lbs).  I went to the doctor for a check up and his blood work showed I was low in iron, the reading was 6.  He prescribed iron supplements.  My question is, does low iron explain my low pulse rate?  Why would I have low iron at this stage of life?
