Support Groups

by April2, Oct 24, 2009 04:19PM
Does anyone know of any support groups or national organizations that can help families who have a child with a brain injury due to a brain aneurysm?
My brother's child had a brain aneurysm about 8 years ago and he's come a long way in healing but they're not sure he'll get much better. He nearly died from this and it's been a long road back. He was in a wheelchair and tube fed for some time. He's now able to walk, feed himself, etc., so he's come a long way but he still is a delicate child.
He suffered what appears to be permanent brain damage to his short term memory so he forgets things easily. It's a bit of a frustration with him going to school, etc., or even just day to day living. He is mainstreamed into regular school and the Special Ed program but he probably will never be able to live on his own or take care of himself completely. He is now 16 and struggles with every day things and has emotional outbursts a lot. We're not sure if it's because he's aware of his limitations and gets frustrated or if it's part of normal teenage hormones or both.
These last 8 years have been an incredible strain on my brother and his wife, financially, emotionally, physically, etc. Their insurance went way past the million dollars allotted and I can't imagine the huge debt they have.
My brother has tried to get help in so many different avenues and hasn't had much luck. There seems to be a support group or help for everything except brain aneurysm patients. My brother even checked into brain injury organizations but they said that he didn't apply because his brain injury wasn't from the result of an accident (like a car accident, etc.) but a pre-existing health condition. He had always been a delicate child since birth with kidney disease and high blood pressure, which is what they think triggered the brain aneurysm.
My brother and his wife almost never even get to go out alone or just be alone, something that's so important for their marriage and for their own emotional health but they can't find anyone willing to watch him or take him for a day or a few hours, even.
I'm surprised they are doing as well as they are. I know they've had so much stress, worry, etc. and could use help and an occasional break.
Does anyone know of a support group or organization that could help them in any way?  Whether financially, emotional support, providing sitter services to give them a break, etc. Any or all of these would really help them so much. Thank you.

Hi April2 - I feel for your brother and his wife. I'm sorry, I don't know of any organizations that provide such support but found a site on-line that may be of some help. I would imagine that you've done a lot of research around this but I thought I'd offer this just in case you hadn't come across it.

All the best to you and your family.
