Angioplasty

Frds
Its a great site i came across

recently I got my dad's routine check up done. And following were the finding related to cronic (chronic) health
1) 2 D echo report says, its all normal (blood flow is normal, heart beats are normal, heart size is normal etc), nothing great found.
2) But in CT scan report we detected high amount of calcium deposite on areteries, and hence angiography was suggested.
3) result of ango graphy shows 90% stenosis in LDA, 50% stenosis in RCA and Angio plasty has been suggesed for LDA.

My question / doubt,

If 2D echo is fine with no abnormalities; how is it possible to have 90% blocakge and have no chest pain (dad has never reported any sort of chest pain, and he excersises daily)

do i need to go for angio plasty?? or shall i think of some other alteranative, please suggest

Hello.

One of the answers I can answer, the other one is something you need to ask a doctor.

1) Echocardiography isn't sensitive enough to pick up blockages / changes in the coronary arteries. Echo is a great tool to scan the heart for structural abnormalities, such as old infarcts, thickened/dilated walls, valve failures/prolapses/regurgitations, and the general pumping abilitites (strength of the heart). To evaluate coronary arteries, EKG and especially stress EKG can give a hint, and so can calcium score (CT), but a diagnosis is given by angiography.

2) This question should be answered by a doctor. It is, however, possible to have severe angina and even heart attacks without noticing it (silent ischemia). 90% blockage is severe, and I would strongly recommend him to at least discuss angioplasty or bypass surgery with his cardiologist, and preferrably one that specializes in CAD.

Best wishes :)
