We have eight Chihuahuas and a Pug. All nine have had stubborn issues with vomiting food for the past few months.
Age range 1-3. Weight range 3.5-12 lbs. None are related. They have a fenced in yard (country), cages in the kitchen. They have no exposure to other dogs.
Six months ago Lucy began vomiting her food several hours after eating. A few gags, up would come undigested food. Then George did the same. Lucy stopped but then the next day Gracie started, etc. All the dogs including the Pug have vomited on and off. Some for a few days, some just once and then not for a while.
Per our vet:
We fed once a day instead of twice, then tried three times. We switched from Iams to Hill's IB prescription dry food, adding plain rice. They've been on that for two months.
We treat the dogs with GastriCalm when they have vomited.
We give the dogs 2 mg of Chlorpheniramine Maleate if they are having seasonal allergy problems (which might be causing them to gag).
We have been giving Ricky, who vomits often, twice daily doses of Metoclopramide 1/2 hour before feeding. He vomits so often that he has dropped weight- his ribs are showing.
Also about 3 months ago we had an issue with ALL the dogs' stools- greasy grey. Per the vet they got two rounds of Giardia treatments plus Giardia vaccinations. Their stools were fine for a week, then all got greasy looking again. Our vet recommended switching their food to Hills IB prescription food and the stools have all been firm and fine since.
Until today. Ricky has been on Metoclopramide for a week, and has not vomited. Until today. And for two months, the dogs' stools have been fine, until today, when one of them looks greasy again (not Ricky's).
We don't know what else to try. Just when we think the dogs are not vomiting (several days or a week with no vomit) somebody throws up. And, of course, Ricky's frequent vomiting is causing concern about his nutritional health. If you have an idea- please help!
