Coughing up blood in mucus

In the last couple of days, our cat has been coughing intermittently.  When he does, the coughing is prolonged and intense, then it stops.

This morning he was coughing again and some mucus came up with a trace of what appeared to be blood in it.

He is a little slower than usual and he still has an appetite, but not the same as before.

Any ideas?

Please take him to a vet.  It sounds like an upper respiratory disease or infection: bronchitis, pneumonia or asthma.  Your vet will have to make the diagnosis for the proper and necessary treatment.
