Dislocated Shoulder

Dislocated Shoulder

Hi, Our Blackie has been limping for last 3 weeks. This morning the vet confirmed that it is dislocated shoulder( front right limb). He has also been getting severe cramps. What can we do to reduce the pain? Can we fix the dislocated shoulder? Thanks.

Dislocations can be reduced by manipulation usually under anesthesia, surgery, or occasionally by just having the patient wear a special brace or sling.  If the shoulder is just subluxated or has an instability, a sling is probably all that is necessary, but your vet should guide you as the the best treatment.

Steroidal anti-inflammatories, such as prednisone, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, such as Rimadyl should be given for the pain and inflammation.  Ice bags can be placed on the shoulder for 10 minutes several times per day and will also help with pain and inflammation.
