Dog is yelping everytime she is picked up around belly and neck region

I have a little Chihuahua around 5 yeas old and is 4 pounds. She started acting different about 5 days ago when she stopped playing, making high pitched yelps when she was picked up at certain times in different ways, but not always. She has been eating and has had normal bowel movements. She has been shivering a lot, whimpering at times, and when she goes to shake off like a lot of dogs do it seems as if she is doing it extra gentle because it appears she doesn't want to hurt herself. Her neck seems a little puffy and she seems to get somewhat more sensitive around her neck. She has been taken to two vets. One did a range of motion tests with her to make sure of pain in her joints or neck and she never yelped when the vet checked each extremity. They also did an urinalysis on her and everything was normal, The vet figured it was muscular pain and gave her a pain medication to take, but she still looked and acted sick.  The second vet couldn't find aything wrong ither and just gave her B-12 to boost her immune system. Her temperature was normal at both vets. She is getting a dark discharge coming out of her eyes and they are watering more than usual, she still isn't playing and doesn't seem to be sleeping much. Any help would be a great help because our vets don't seem to know what is wrong with her and this is one chihuahua that doesn't ever yelp unless something is wrong, in fact she hardly ever makes any noises at all.

Now my dog seems to be getting worse because now it is like she is yelping a lot more now when she is picked up, and it seems to be when you are around her chest and stomach area. She is sitting in her cage shaking and obveously looks to be in pain. I no longer have any anti inflamatory medicine and I doubt the vet will give me anymore. Being I am not made of money and I already took her to two vets, I now have no clue what to do.

Thank You!

Stephanie

I have answered this question in another post, but I would like to add that some intervertebral disk disease problems require surgery.  If the medication did not help her than please take her to a veterinary neurologist ASAP.  Additionally, there may be more than one issue occurring simultaneously, i.e.: disk disease, gastrointestinal disease, an eye issue, and Tick or other disease.

The medications that help for disk pain are:

Steroids, Tramadol, and Amantadine for pain; and,  Pepcid and Sucralfate to protect the stomach from harsh effects of the pain medications.

Acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and, Western medications can also help.

The eye problem is probably unrelated to the musculoskeletal condition.

It really sounds as is she has a spinal injury, in her cervical region and possibly in other spinal areas.  This could be invertebral disk disease, or another spinal problem, and can be extremely painful.  Spinal problems do not show up on X-Rays usually, unless the problem is so chronic that bony changes have occurred.

Another possibility is an infectious disease,  such as a tick borne disease, such as Lyme's, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Babesia, Ehrlichia, Anaplasmosis, etc.She should be checked for these disease, and others.
