Ferret Showing Some Signs of Adrenal Disease but Is Cleared by Moving to Dark Room

In July last year, my ferret, Carly, started losing her beautiful brown fur. She was moved to a room with more light and it got worse! I also noticed that her vulva was swelling. When I did research, she had shown some symptoms of adrenal tumors or adrenal disease. She was moved into a darker room and her fur came back along with her normal vulva size. A person I know did research on her symptoms. They said something about 'photo dysplasia'. Because I cannot find anything on photo dysplasia, I'm confused. What did (or does) my little Carly have? She is 3 or 4 years old and she has been spayed. She did not act sickly in any way when she was bald (except on her face) and her vulva was enlarged. In the room she was in before all of this started, the light started increasing just so I could see my computer keyboard.

Dear Dejiko Higurashi,

It is very common for ferrets to develop adrenal disease. At the same time the circadian cycle also affects melatonin secretion which also influences fur growth and replacement.
I would see a veterinarian and have Carly evaluated for adrenal disease.

Daylight may stimulate endogenous melatonin release somewhat mitigating signs of disease. Today there is an implantable melatonin product, "Ferratonin" which is used for adrenal disease treatment in ferrets.

There are also other drugs which may be chosen in certain situations as well.
Do see your doctor.

Very best regards,

Dear Dr. Goldman,
Both me and my little fuzzy weasel thank you for your help. Even for being as young as I am, I do worry about Carly, so I hope she still has several healthy years ahead of her. Though why I did not find this site earlier, I don't know. I do know that my immediate family thank you for letting us know about Carly's condition. I will get her to a vet as soon as I can, for me and my mother worry.
Thank you,
Dejiko Higurashi and Carly
