High levels of RBC,HCT and HGB in poodles blood test

My poodle had some routine blood work done before his teeth cleaning this morning. His RBC was at 9.14 (5.50-8.50 range), HCT at 64.8 (37.0-55.0 range) and HGB at 20.5 (12.0-18.0).  The rest were within normal levels.  When I asked about the high readings they said it was because he was dehydrated.  One of his teeth was infected and 4 had to be pulled.  He is 9 years old. They put him on antibiotics, Zeniquin and Previcox for pain.  Can you give me anymore information on what could have caused these readings and what I can do for him???

Your vet is absolutely correct.  Mild dehydration can cause elevations of RBC, HCT and HGB.  The blood work elevations are very mild.  When your vet performed the dentistry he/she probably gave IV or sub-Q fluids to normalize your dog's blood work.  Older dogs may drink a bit less because the hypothalamus in his brain, which controls thirst doesn't work as well as in a younger dog.  Try to get your dog to drink more water, especially in the summer season by placing some ice cubes in the water, or putting down separate bowls of dilute pedialyte, Gatorade, or even dilute vegetable, chicken, or other broths.  Some dog's prefer running water the best, so purchase a doggie or kitty water fountain.  They are not too expensive and worth it if it keeps your dog hydrated.
