Human Exposure to Dog Blood

Human Exposure to Dog Blood

This may be a silly question but:

Is there a risk to humans following exposure to dog's blood?

My dog cut itself quite badly today and both my husband and I (and also my toddler touched the blood on the ground!) got blood on us when we were cleaning and dressing the wound.

We are in Australia.

Thanks very much.

No not really.  You would have to be extremely immunosuppressed with aids or on immunosuppressive drugs post organ transplantation.  If your dog had an active Leptospirosis, Rabies or other very serious disease and your exposed skin had cuts on them than there is a risk.  If your dog is healthy otherwise and is up to date on all necessary vaccines than the risk is low or non-existant.  I would call your local veterinarian just in case.  I practice in USA and travel to Hong Kong twice yearly (near enough to Australia)!
