Inhales food

Inhales food

About 2 months ago I adopted a 2 year old cardigan welsh corgi from the pound. She had an UPI when I got her so she was on antibiotics for two weeks. During that time she wouldn't eat and all she would do is sleep. Now, ever since she has better she is perfectly fine except now she inhales her food. I feed my dogs Purina Beneful. Can this behavior hurt her in anyway and if so how can I make her slow down? Her food will be gone in about 30 second and she only gets about 1/3 of a cup 3 times a day. She started gaining a lot of weight when she got better.

Also, I saw that Purine had prepared meals, which wet dog food but it's more like real food, with beef, chicken, pasta, rice, green beans, etc. I was wondering if it's better to feed the wet food or dry food.

It sounds like she is trying to make up for when she had the UTI.  I am sure her eating will slow down once she returns to normal.  Most holistic foods that contain limited grains are good foods.  Good brands are: Evo/Innova, Wellness, Natures Variety, California Naturals, Orijin canned only, and many more.  All the foods should contain no gluten.  Rice and Millet are OK for a young dog that has no food allergies.  Feed 1/2 canned, frozen or wet, and 1/2 dry, or all wet.  Raw diets are safe for some pets as long as the bones have been ground find and enzymes have been added.

I would also add probiotics to her food as a supplement.  Two weeks of antibiotics could have killed off her beneficial bacteria and should be replenished by the probiotics.  I would also have her stool checked for parasites and treated if necessary.

Bones are best to enable the dog to fulfil its chewing / gnawing requirements.

Dry food can be scattered around the garden so they have to sniff the pellets out, rather than given in a bowl.
