Kitten constipation

Kitten constipation

I am fostering a kitten who had a prolasped rectum. The vet did a purse string surgery, and all went well for the first week. Now the kitten is constipated. I have taken him back to the vet twice. He has been cleaned out by the vet twice in the past week. You can see stool in his rectum. My vet gave me a stool softner and told me to put mineral oil in his food. Any suggestions? Nothing seems to work. Linny

I am very sorry about your poor kitten.

Cascara herbal supplementation in a oral solution that does not contain alcohol is very effective for cats with megacolon and constipation.  Your cat also needs a probiotic supplement and a very high protein, grain free, canned, or home-made diet.  NO DRY FOOD!  And lots of hydration.

The Chinese herbal supplements: Da Cheng Qi Tang, or Fan Xie Ye, are also very good for constipation.

Fan Xie Ye is just ground up Senna seed.

You may be able to find Senna Seed herbal supplement at a health food store.  You would use approximately 1/10 to 1/8  of the human adult dose depending on the size of the kitten.
