Meloxydyl

My dog takes meloxydyl with her food ( for arthritis) and has done for several months. On two occasions she has developed what has been described as stress-related collitis. which has usually responded quickly to an antibiotic/ antiinflammatory injection and temporary suspension  of meloxydyl. The condition has recurred once again and so I would appreciate a second opinion as to the need for the same treatment. Some ongoing stress is understandable since she recently lost her very best, ever present friend of 14 years, and she still seems to look for her.

I am truly sorry for the loss of your other dog!

Aging in and of itself is immunosuppressive.  Stress can cause a decrease in the immune system of any animal and colitis can result in dehydration if untreated. Therefore, treating for colitis may be a good idea in an older dog who is truly stressed.

Thankyou for your opinion. I feel reassured that we are doing the right thing, although trying to make a dog drink ain't easy!
