Sacralization

Sacralization

My young puppy of nine months old was 'bowled' over by another larger puppy just before Christmas 2010.
Since then she has been lame on her off side hind leg. She uses it quite well, but once she extends on it she is lame, and seems quite stiff when she rises from rest.
She has had x rays to determine what is the problem.
She has been diagnosed with Sacralization which I have never heard of before.
Please could you tell me more about the complaint, how it comes about, and what is the best treatment for it.
I am so upset, as I bred this puppy, and she is such a sweetie.
Please help

The term "Sacralization" refers to a developmental abnormality in which the first sacral vertebra becomes fused with the last lumbar vertebra.  This problem can be associated with other problems called lumbar sacral stenosis, and/or lumbosacral disease.  Stenosis refers to narrowing of disk spaces thus pinching the nerves.  Both diseases can affect the sciatic, sacral and caudal nerves.  These nerves innervate the hip, knees, and the rest of the rear legs, anus and urinary bladder.  Blockage or damage to these nerves results in dysfunction, such as lameness and other abnormalities to anywhere on the rear legs.

Medical treatment consists of either a non-steroidal anti-inflammatories or steroid anti-inflammatories for 6 to 8 weeks with strict cage rest.  Cage rest means walking on a leash only, with no running or other athletic activity.  Than exercise is slowly introduced gradually.  Acupuncture, physical therapy and chiropractic may also help.

Surgery is another option.
