Snorting

Snorting

My dog started snorting a few days ago and I took him to the vet.  The vet prescribed antibiotics and said it could be kennel cough.  He has been going to day care and is always at the dog park, so it is possible?  But, he has all of his vaccinations, so I thought he was protected.  I have read several people talk about their small dogs or short snouted dogs snorting, but I can't seem to find any information about my large bread.  I have had great danes before and have never had this problem.  He doesn't have a temperature and he has normal appetite and energy....just this snorting and a little vomiting (mostly mucus).  I can also hear a little congestion in his throat.

He has been on the antibiotics for 4 days and I am not seeing any improvement, could this be something else?  Should I get a second opinion?

Thanks!!

Kennel cough is a very common affliction whether or not the patient has been vaccinated for bordetella or not.

The kennel cough vaccine does help, but is not 100% effective so many dogs can get milder infections, even though vaccinated.  It can take up to 6 weeks or more for kennel cough to resolve so the fact that your dog is not better after 4 days could mean one of the following:  that the antibiotic requires more time to be effective, or that it is not the correct antibiotic , or that she may also require some cough medication or an anti-inflammatory.
