Trouble Urinating

My 5 year old westie urinated in the house today for the first time.  And she just started whining and crying to go out in the middle of the night, where as she used to sleep in with me every morning.  Now every time I take her out to use the bathroom she urinates and then squats multiple times (about 10 times) without urinating, as if she's struggling.

Please let me know if this is something I can help her with myself or should I take her to the vet.

Thanks!

Please bring a fresh urine sample to your veterinarian for urinalysis.  It sounds as if she has a urinary tract infection and requires antibiotics and other medications.  Dogs can also get uroliths (crystals) which would also have to be addressed.

Cranberry capsules may help as an adjunct to antibiotics and other prescription medications.

Hello..While your waiting for the Vet to answer, I'll respond, too. The symptoms you describe, are symptoms of a UTI.  A simple urinalysis will be able to detect an infection & or blood in the urine.  An antibiotic is given to clear the infection. She should also be examined for bladder stones. Both of these conditions are very common and can be treated. Also, they are both painful. This is not something you can take care of yourself. She needs to see her Vet ASAP. Good luck and let us know the outcome.....Karla

Thanks for all the responses!  I did take her to the vet immediately and it was a UTI.  She's on antibiotics and doing a lot better now!  Thank you all for your help and support!  I really appreciate it!  What a great website!
