Unfortunately we all go through these thoughts and cycle of life and death.  While there are no specific signs that indicate death, your veterinarian most likely can do a lot to help your cat.  Many cats as they get old get changes that cause weight loss.  All of them have therapies to help your cat's quality of life.  Some of them are curable with treatment, and some are just treatable.  Your veterinarian should check for diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and kidney changes.  You may also wish for him or her to check the viral status of your cat as well as it can make a difference in response to therapy.  Blood pressure is also a helpful parameter to know in cats.  All of these things can be done in a short office visit including a thorough exam, blood draw, and urine sample.
No matter what, it will help your cat to get checked out to allow her to feel better with therapies on board.  Just letting her go may be allowing her to be painful at this time and she's not even showing it.  As it shows on the website, http://www.healthycatsforlife.com - cats have subtle signs of sickness -- they often don't show you that they have a problem. ie unexplained weight loss is not normal.
