Until Dr. Cheng replies, I have to tell you that you need to find out WHY the leg is swollen. If the underlying injury like maybe a blown tendon or even a bone fracture, it's going to take a lot more than ice packs and anti-inflammatory meds to treat the swelling. There's no point in trying to figure this one out yourself. Please get your pointer to your vet as soon as possible. It would be tragic to let a possibly serious injury go untreated too long and result in an even worse situation.
Sorry about the delay in responding. I was at a vet conference.
Have you taken Jaybay's advice and taken your pointer to a vet? If so what was the outcome? How old is your dog? Could he or she have arthritis. I recommend that all dogs over the age of 3 who do not have joint problems take a good Glucosamine and Chondroitin combination supplement for joint health. If the pet is less than 3 and has congenital joint disease such as hip dysplasia, luxating patella, and others, to start as soon as they learn of the abnormality.
