cats ears

Hi i adopted a cat and when i got him he had lots of debris in his ear so i took him back and they cleaned them and gave me stuff cause he scratched his ears up pretty bad. And he still keeps getting stuff in his ears and shakes his head alot and sometimes hold his ear down. He doesnt seem to be in any pain just annoyed by it. Could this be ear mites, or could he have an ear probblem?

yes to both questions...
it certainly sounds like ear mites as ear infections of that severity occur less in cats then in dogs. It should be very easy for your vet to diagnose ear mites. a little mineral oil in the ear (to trap the mites) and then examining a swab under the microscope is all that is needed. you will be able to see the mites swimming around and then the correct medication can be prescribed. If the mite test is negative then a swab can be looked at under the microscope for yeast or bacteria; both of these cause ear infections and should be treated specifically.
