A manual count is necessary for an accurate platelet count.  Machine counts will routinely count clumps of platelets as single platelets thus giving an artificially low count.

There are many causes for the symptoms that you have described, such as:  Autoimmune thrombocytopenia, lupus, autoimmune-onychodystrophy, zinc deficiency, tick borne diseases, other infectious diseases, cancer,  and many many more.

Although your dog has improved with the current regimen, it still might be a good idea to see a veterinarian specializing in internal medicine to find a definitive diagnosis, and hopefully to prevent repeat episodes.
