uti in cats?

my 5 year old orange tabby suddenly started to have a bit of a problem last night. he was meowing and straining when it came to going pee. itwas a very hot day, and i got the house cooled off as fast as i could. i checked the vet's office, and my vet is only in monday hrough friday. so i have to wait untill monday to take him to get checked out.
i did my best to check him over, and here are my findings, abdomen is normal no hard spots and he doesn't get upsett when i massage at it as this is something we normally do. there are no tender spots either, so it seems that his bladder is not full and having a hard time releasing. his temp feels normal in his ears. little warmer than my own. he is not being loafish. he still tucks himsef up when he lays down. he is not any less active than normal either. he does not seem to be grooming excessively, and he is not going outside of the box. he did once, but that's because the other cat stunk it up and he couldn't go in yet. there is no blood in the urine that i am able to see. there's nothing wrong with the spots in the box now, and when he did go outside of the box i didn't see any signs of blood in his spot.
i have been using a feeding sringe that i have for medicines, and what not to give him extra water every couple hours. he's having 2 syringes full every hour or if i choose to let him sleep he just gets more water when he wakes up.
today he has gone to the litter box twice, both times it was fairly productive, and only once did he make a second trip shortly after which was less productive, only a spot the size of a quarter. i have been watching him like a hawk to make sure he's not going outside of the box and is not exhibiting other symptoms.
while im waiting to take him to the vet on monday is there anything else that i can do? do people remedies work on our pets?

He doesn't sound as if he is blocked which is important.  Corn silk extract, either alone or  in combination with other herbs is very good for urinary tract problems, as is cranberry capsules, both should be available at a good health food stores.  The following is one of my colleagues:

i wanted to thank you again. he's doing really well! he hates cranberry taste tho. i will figure soething out with that. i acutally put the dried cranberries in a fresh leaf of cat nip and he ate them as treats. worked famously! got some cranberry extract at the health food store. that is going to take some work and some crafty thinking.
i had 11 spots in the litter box for 2 cats today.
i had mixed some food with additional water to get them to drink more as it was again going to be really hot.
even if it were half and half... he still did awesome! he's just a bit mad still about the feeding syringe and the extra water.
thanks again so much!!!

thank you so much!!!! i really appreciate your imput. i actually had some dried cranberries in the house as i like to cook with them. i offered him some and he ate a few. i will be sure to use those and the cranberry extract and corn silk extract. i can get that from the natural foods stor 5 blocks from my home. you do something amazing by taking the time to speak with concerned owners online.

he made 5 spots in the litter box yesterday with all the fluids i was giving him. his pain has stopped. i have been watching him go, and he is no longer struggeling. he just squats and does it covers it and wanders off. normally in heat like this i see 2-3 spots. i watch my pets haabits as they are generally able to help tell eaarly on if there is a problem.
was he possibly just suffering the same problem i have with extreme heat? we were sxperiencing our first heat wave of the year. he slept infront of the air conditioner with me last night, but before that he was starting to get back to normal eating, and wresteling with his pet Titania. (the small cat)  he was also being just as loving as always with anyone in the house. my self, my boyfriend, my best friend... he wanted everyone to give him as much attention as i had been.
the problem i have with heat is that if i do not have enough water i feel like i have a uti starting, however when i cool off i no longer feel that way.
you wouldn't by chance be able to tell me if there is a way to find a wholistic vet in y area would you? I live in Allentown, PA. I partake in wholistic medicines when ever the condition is able to warrant it myself, so i think it would be great to be able to have my pets do that as well.
