Recurrent problems with kittens

by oxongriffin, Nov 09, 2009 05:13AM
Hi,

I am now at my parents’ (in India) where, since 2006, none of the kittens born to our six year old female cat have survived. In fact, they usually die within 2-4 weeks of birth, and follows the pattern as exhibited by the latest batch of three. They developed problems when they were 18 days old (5 days ago). It all starts with their abdomen becoming enlarged. Within days, they are unable to walk/crawl, and can only lie down sideways, with their head slumping to one side. They often violently twist and toss themselves, all the while crying pitifully. Their body temperature drops and they lose their muscle tone despite my parents’ best efforts to keep them hydrated. Unfortunately, their mother abandons them within a day of these symptoms developing and remains unheeding of their cries. Her previous batch survived for 5 weeks, until they started excreting round worms. Although they were dewormed, they died soon after.

My parents showed them to numerous vets around (the area doesn’t have any vets specialising in cats though)- they are baffled and state that it may probably be an incurable virus which also affects big cats in the forests.

I would very much appreciate getting any pointers on what the problem could be/on how to solve this?

The solution to this problem is a SPAY!  I would not let this mother cat have anymore litters.  Regardless of the cause of this strange problem, simply stop the breeding.
