Dr. Pits please help! Terrified of mediaction and weight gain!

Dear Dr Pitts,

I have been struggling with reduced food intake and over concern with how my body feels in my clothes, with high school anoprexia weight at 100lbs and then gaining 45lbs when I moved out.  I started to take efedra to lose fat but I got shaky and heart palpitaions.  I then stopped.  I also did not have my period for about 4years back then.

I got married and have been in a extremely difficult realtionship.  But we have pulled through with the help of our faith in God and Jesus.  It has although taken it;'s too on me and I was triggered to really cut back about 4years ago now and started purging after dessert.  I am addicted to sweets, they make me high and carbs comfort me.  I need your help,  will Celexa decrease the mental addicton for food I have?  I juat started it.  I purge and binge eat about 3-4 times day and I am desperate to stop!  Im 30 years old.  Could My metabloism be ruined forever since I have suffered with anorexia and bulimia for 17years?  I am affraid to death I will go through refeeding!

Please help me!

Marlane

I have not had my period for almost a year now but am at a healthy weight and I feel good.  Could I be damaged?  Does that mean I have completely shot my matabloism?

Dear Marlane,

I applaud you for all the hard work you have done thus far in your recovery.  Celexa is a medication used to help those with eating disorders.  Celexa helps decrease depression, obsessive compulsive behavior and anxiety giving you more of a chance to effectively deal with your food and your life.

Years of an eating disorder can take a toll on your body causing metabolism problems.  In addition, it is crucial to get your period activated.  Your weight may be healthy or it may be too low for your period to start.  I’m hoping you have a medical doctor in which you can address your medical concerns.  If not, please seek out an eating disorder specialist to learn specifically about your body’s needs.  Having your husband, family member or friend to go with you can help give you the courage to take the step.
