health problems related to malnutrition

I have recently been diagnosed as anorexic. My pediatrician ran some blood tests and an EKG. She reported back the only current abnormality is a decreased count of a type of white blood cell called a neutrophil. She said this was most likely caused by the fact that I have severly restricted my food intake.

I'm not sure if you can help me here. But I was just wondering if there could be another underlying cause of this deficiency? I know that some viral infections also can lower your white blood cell count, and I was concerned that maybe I should get tested for HIV too?

I'm also just in general curious about what this all means.

Thanks for the help,

Dear m2310,

It does sound like your pediatrician has given you an accurate answer to your blood work.  I would go back to your pediatrician and ask the questions you asked me.  Even if there are other issues, it does sound like malnourishment is one of the causes which needs to be addressed.
