permanent damage?

I am recovering from bulimia, and have been for about three months now.  I was bulimic for 7 years (I started at age 16), and only ceased for two healthy pregnancies.  I didn't realize all the harm I was causing to my body.  I really don't know much about it, but I guess I am curious if my body will ever get back to normal.  How long, if ever, will it take for your metabolism to return to normal?  Is it possible to get cancer from throat damage?  I wouldn't binge every day, but maybe 3-4 times a week.  I have no sore throats..... but I do feel like my voice has changed a little.  I'm hoping I've stopped before too much damage was done.  Also, I have been diagnosed with post-partum thyroiditis now, could this be related to bulimia, or simply to pregnancy?  Thanks.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Dear Joycea,

Congratulations on taking steps in your recovery!  As you are aware, bulimia can cause extensive damage to the body.  Over my 27 years of treating eating disorders, I have seen many individuals have damaged metabolism.  I have also seen metabolism return to normal for most.  For some it has taken months for others years.  Purge free (vomiting, laxatives, diuretics) with stable eating and exercise has helped.  Reflux often is a sign of prolong vomiting. Since I am a psychologist, not a medical doctor, I will not address your questions on cancer and thyroiditis.  Visit our website to learn more about bulimia and treatment options.

Also, I forgot to add, I have minor heart burn now.  Could bulimia have caused reflux?  Thanks.
