Dear jon345,

The hot drink is probably not associated with physical bloating.  Some individuals talk about bloating related to feeling filled with emotions.  Also, Karen David, The Bella Vita’s chief dietitian, speaks of how anorexics often go to sugar free gum and candy which causes gas bloating and diarrhea from the sugar alcohol.  She also speaks of bloating occurring from delayed gastric emptying where bowels have not been working properly due to fluids not pushing against them.  It is best to stay away from a high fiber diet.

Hang in there.  You need to go through the discomfort to heal your body.  Stay factual with yourself; try to stay out of the emotions and physical discomfort.

Some snack options for your needs are yogurt with granola, ½ peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat bread with milk, trail mix, white beans with tomato slices on whole wheat pita, edamame and tomato juice, almond butter on whole grain toast, cheese and crackers, bowl of cereal or almonds and raisin.  If you are willing to eat dried fruit it is easier on digestion then fresh fruits and would help you with delayed gastric emptying.

Best,

Hi there,

Unfortunately, in recovery from anorexia it's not really uncommon to have these feelings, and physical symptoms. I know it makes it much, much harder, but it's just part of it. When one's body has been starved for so long, it has to "readjust" once it starts getting food again. It WILL pass though and when your body gets used to the idea of getting food, and learns to trust you again, this will not continue. It's very important to remember though that this is only something that is temporary and that your body will not do this forever when you eat. It's been through a lot with eating disordered behaviors and now that you are starting to nourish it again, it has to learn to trust you and know that it can properly use the nutrients you are giving it now you know? Is this making sense? If you're having a hard time with your stomach you could try taking some sort of over the counter medication to help ease the pain. Does this help at all? Are you seeking professional help as you go through the recovery process?

My Dad took me to see a special doctor quite a few times but all it did was make me feel worse. Our local doctor prescribed some gaviscon for my bloeted feeling but that really upset me.

What do you mean by special doctor? I think over the counter meds can help with bloating. Before I tell you specifically, let me find out for sure what it was that was recommended to my friends and me in treatment. I will get back with you on that. It might even be something like Tums. Don't hold me to that though. I will let you know.
