Abilify?

I went to the doctors yesterday he wants me to start Abilify? Does anyone know anything about this medication good or bad? He also wants me to Up my Klonopin to 4mg 's a day . He said if he were to change me to adavin he would have to put me on such a high dosage as much as 12mg? Does this seem right i am seriously thinking my doctors nutts :(  Everytime i went to the Emergancy room after my dad passed i was given a shot 2mg;s of adavin it calmed me down so i could think .. feel i could breath ect...  So i don't see why i would possibley need to take that much when 2mg's helped doesn't make sense.....

I can't give you medical advice, just would say I'm not sure losing one's father is a reason for additional drugs unless you're really not functioning at all.  When you lose a parent, it has to be hard, don't want to suppress grief.  Let yourself have the grief.  But again, I don't know how bad the depression and anxiety were.  Was it losing your father that caused the medication you're on to stop working?  Also, remember, the benzos you're on don't help with depression, only with anxiety.

I used to be on imipramine for anxiety attacks, and when I was dumped by a woman I loved very much it just stopped working.  Funny, because it's supposed to be an antidepressant!  That's why I'm probing deeper here.  It doesn't sound to me like abilify is necessarily the right medication for you, you might want to google it and reasearch it yourself but its adverts on tv suggest it's when your antidepressant isn't working, and you aren't on an antidepressant.  Even on tv they suggest it has some serious side effects, so I'd do some homework first.

I am so sorry about your loss..no one can replace a parent.  It's only normal that you are having a hard time coping, but you are going to be okay...it takes time.  My mom has been on anti-depressants for years and when it Lexapro stopped working the doctor prescribed Abilify the moment it hit the market.  her doctor said it helps when your current medication basically needs a boost..not a miracle drug by any means.  But then again what works for one person may not work for next..no it did not help her...gave her more anxiety.  But I am sure this is something you need to discuss further with your doctor.

Hugs,

Out of the currently available antipsychotics Abilify is the one with the most favorable side effect profile. It also is used as a mood stabilizer. You'd have to ask the psychiatrist specifically what it was for. Ativan is shorter acting than Klonopin so it would be given at a different dose. Klonopin however (which I've taken for 10 years without a problem) has less of a potential for a person to build up a tolerance to so if you are on it and don't have a problem with it might be the better of the two choices. The intravenous (shot) form of Ativan enters your bloodstream right away so it would have more of an immediate effect at a lower dose. The best thing to do is ask your psychiatrist what your specific diagnosis is and what symptoms specifically they are trying to help.
