Klonopin cannot be taken on an "as needed" basis. You must take this med daily in three divided doses for it to have a therapeutic effect.
One does not become "addicted" to Klonopin in the sense you mean. Your body does build a certain tolerance to it, which is why, after long term use, you must taper off this med. But once it has reached a "therapeutic" level in your blood stream, you will never have to keep increasing the dose to maintain that effect, which you must do if you are "addicted" to a chemical substance. You can put your fears of addiction to Klonopin to rest.
There are many medications out there that CAN be used effectively on an "as needed" basis. Your doctor should be able to discuss these options with you. Together you can then decide which would be the best for your situation.

Namaste,
Obviously you know that Klonopin, like all the benzos can be habit forming and that withdrawal from them can sometimes be painful.
That said, however, you should take the medication as it was prescribed for you.
The doctor who prescribed it did so after evaluating your specific symptoms and made the decision through his/her experience that a particular regime of treatment would be best for you at this time.
Bow to their judgement and take your medication as it was prescribed. Withdrawal from Klonopin can to relatively easy if monitored by a physician.
