Alcohol Related Paranoia

by LiamF, May 22, 2008 09:07AM
Hi im Liam i work for a Mental Health organisation and we do 1 to 1 support. I am currently working with a 17 year old girl who seems to live a totally healthy life. She works, goes to school, boyfriend and lives at home however, when she drinks and gets drunk she has bad periods that last 2 - 3 weeks. She wont leave home, walk on her own, and she described it as paranoia. However, if she drinks and doesn't get to a certain point where she becomes drunk. She is totally fine and doesn't even think about these bad spells. I was wondering if there was anything that you can associate with this

Alcohol can cause paranoia, depression, anxiety....a multitude of not-so-pleasant side effects.  I drink maybe once a year...because I used to feel majorly depressed the morning after having a few cocktails.  Everyone of course reacts differently as well.

I would strongly suggest that she stop drinking for a while and see if that makes a difference.  If it does, then I think it's safe to say she needs to stop drinking all together.  Especially since she doesn't seem to drink to excess from what you said.

I wish her good luck.

If I drink to the point that I'm hung-over the next morning, it plays HAVOC on my mind and body.  I get extremely agitated and am basically on the verge of a panic attack for several days.  I have taken almost all alcohol out of my life and feel much better for it.  I'm not "cured" by any means, but my overall state of being is much better.
