Antivan and Insomnia

I don't know how and when this all started, but I would guess approx. 5 years ago. I started taking Lorazepam (1mg) for panic attacks. Somehow I also started taking a half of a tablet because I couldn't fall asleep.  Now I cannot fall asleep without taking one. I have been able to keep it down to 1 mg. But I have tried to wean myself off and I can't.  I tried for an entire week and I would be awake the entire night. Any suggestions?

You will have a few sleepless night but you can let go of the pill. I switched to melatonin a OTC natural sleep aid. It works well.

sometimes it will stir up anxiety and also since its not regulated you should let your doc know what you are doing.

You are most likely experiencing rebound insomnia.  What happens is...your body builds up a tolerance to the Ativan, where you require a higher and higher dose to accomplish what you're taking it for (in your case, sleep).  So, when you start weaning off of it....you get a resulting worsening insomnia.  The good news is....it won't last forever.  You just may have to tough it out a bit.

Talk with your doc about options.  I personally am not a fan of meds for insomnia unless it is ABSOLUTELY necessary.  When meds are required, Ativan really isn't the best choice, there are many other WAY better choices.  One thing you can try while you work through this is try some brisk walking...or if you're an active person already....some moderate exercise in the evening.

When we exert ourselves, our body releases endorphins which  basically causes a natural high, a natural antidepressant if you will.  Also, it can induce sleep as well.  There are a lot of other, non-pharmaceutical options out there...biofeedback, music, aromatherapy, etc.  Personally, I would just try a bit of exercise, and try to hang in there until you rid yourself of the Ativan.
