Anxiety and BP or ADHD

by hmats911, Dec 02, 2006 12:00AM

My son was diagnosed ADHD from age 10 and was put on Adderal, Ritalin, Concerta and then tried Straterra he was very irritable and had bad side effects, at age 16 he started self medicating with marijuana and can barely make it a day at school or a job without throwing up or having bowl issues, he is 17 and not sure if he is ADHD/BPolar but he suffers from panic attacks and can barely make it at school and self mediciates with marijuana....i sent him to rehab and had him then put on prozac which is making him very irritable and moody, angry/sad/happy all at once and he throws up and gets shortness of breath so now we are trying Neurontin. Any suggestions about this medicine, we have been to 2 different doctors, one says ADHD/Anxiety/Substance the other says Mood Disorder/ADHD/ possible Mania

Can prozac and adderal make someone more anxious without having a mood stabilizer if they do have BP? He does not have the depression but he does feel like his life sucks but then 5 minutes later is on a new topic and happy...the only time he seemed happy is when he smoked and it is not tolerated in my home and it is against the law- Thank you!!

It would be very difficult to diagnose a disorder online.

Is your son still self-medicating with any drugs?

If the answer is yes, or, not sure; then no doctor could ever make a responsible diagnosis except to say that it is possible that your son has a dual disorder of drug abuse/misuse with potential schizo-affective or manic-depressive episodes.

Keep working with your son.  Try to help him stay away from any quick-fix drugs that will, in the long term, be to his detriment and make a true diagnosis impossible.  Once diagnosed, be vigilent and make sure he takes his meds and I think you will soon see some real improvements.

The best to you both.
