Anxiety and dry mouth?

by ice_princess, Nov 04, 2009 12:05PM
I've been going though a lot of changes in my life. End of a relationship, beginning of a new long distance relationship, busy at work, busy at school, feeling isolated, possibly moving across the county, where will i live, what if i can't do my new job in a new place...so lots of things!

I know I have anxiety really bad. I have a lot of symptoms and the dr pretty much ruled out anything physical wrong with me. i lost a ton of weight, can't sleep though the night, can't eat, the food has no flavor, digestive problems. My absolute biggest problem is dry mouth.  I had extreme stress before but never this symptom. It feels horrible and my tongue is burning all the time from it and can't speak or go more than 30 seconds without a sip of water. I am not taking any new medicine I haven't taken for over a year, my sugar is good, no anemia, no internal bleeding, blood count is fine, no oral problems like thrush, tooth or throat issues. Can extreme dry mouth be caused by anxiety? Is there any relief? Have any of you experienced this before? Please help!!

Wow, I can't belive someone has the same thing as me. I too have anxiety and a constant dry mouth. wherever i go i have to carry a water bottle with me, since if it gets too dry i can't speak. It tends to happen more in social situations though and i have social anxiety as well as GAD. Is yours all the time or at particular times? And yes it's most likely from the anxiety.

i too have anxiety everyday and yes that annoying constant dry mouth .I have to carry a water bottle with me where ever i go.I also have this tingly feeling from arms to my head.I hated it so much. I just learn to float with it ,sometimes it's hard but most times it's not that bad.Good luck to both of you guys. We will overcome this someday

To me it gets a little better in social situations...and hearing about other people's problem helps because I'n not focusing on mine for the moment. Also when I'm sitting in a hot bath i feel better. Does any of you take medication for anxiety? One herbal suplement helps but can not be taken with antidepressants. It's a serotonin supplement called 5-HTP. For people with mild anxiety it helps, but with severe anxiety that i have now i find it ineffective. Have you guys tried psychotherapy? Anything that works? I would love to hear about it. Yesterday I discovered if i chew sugar free gum it stimulates saliva production, and while the gum has flavor your mouth is back to almost normal.

Try biotene. You can get the toothpaste and mouthwash at walmart. It's really good for dry mouth.

I've been prescribed zoloft, but i don't take it. Instead i've been doing cognative behavior therapy for a few months now. It's helped somewhat, but i still feel anxious most of the time.
